Volleyball Suffers Five-Set Loss at Ohio Dominican

After coming from two sets back to win Friday night at Tiffin, the Malone University volleyball team experienced the opposite fate Saturday at Ohio Dominican, winning the first two sets but falling in the last three (25-20, 26-24, 15-25, 16-25, 9-15) in the season finale.

The Pioneers, after tying a season-high with 59 kills against Tiffin, continued their hot hitting in the first set, tallying 16 kills on a .300 attacking percentage. In the second frame, Malone overcame a 16-23 deficit, winning 10 of the final 11 points to go up by two sets. However, the hitting woes that have plagued the Pioneers for much of the year were again on display in the final three sets. Malone hit just .035 over the remainder of the game as the Panthers finished off the comeback in five.

The Pioneers tallied 16 kills in each of the first two sets but managed just 20 kills over the course of the final three. Leading the scoring for Malone was senior Elizabeth Maczuzak who registered 15 kills in her final collegiate match.  Freshman Mallory Adams recorded 12 kills while junior Haley Kool and senior Sarah Brent added 9 and 8 kills respectively. Freshman setter Cathryn Miller dished out 44 assists and surpassed the 1000-assist mark in the match, finishing the year with 1019.

Malone collected 81 digs in the match. Freshman libero Maggie Hamrock led the Pioneers with a game-high 22 digs. Maczuzak and Miller recorded double-doubles for the second straight night as the duo went for 15 and 11 digs respectively. Senior Heather Papp added 10 digs in her final match. Adams, Kool, Maczuzak, and freshman Veronica Gehring all finished with 2 blocks each.

For Ohio Dominican, senior Tory Thompson landed a game-high 20 kills while junior Jackie Oestreich, who is ranked 2nd in the GLIAC in blocks, finished the match with 9 total blocks.

With the loss, Malone ended the season with an 11-22 overall record and a 4-14 mark in its last year in the GLIAC.
