Dragons Score in Double-Overtime to Take 3-2 Contest Over Pioneers

The Malone University women's soccer team lost a heartbreaking 3-2 double-overtime contest at Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opponent Tiffin University on Friday afternoon.

Five minutes into the first half, forward Brianna Smith dished the ball to Christine Najjar who knocked the ball into the left side of the net to tally her 10th goal of the season, giving Malone the early 1-0 lead.

At the 43:08 marker, the Dragons' Taylor Lewis launched a shot from 40-yards out that curved in off the post to tie the game at 1-1. The score would stay 1-1 at the half.

The Dragons fired back early in the second half, as they scored at the 47:54 marker to take the 2-1 advantage.

20 minutes later, the dynamic duo of Smith and Najjar teamed up for a second time as Najjar netted her second goal to tie the game back up at 2-2 with 22 minutes left in regulation.

With six seconds left in the game, Corrin Hayberg had a chance to score the game-winning goal, but her attempt was too high, which sent the Pioneers and Dragons into overtime.

Malone fought hard and kept the ball at Tiffin's end for most of the first overtime, but was unable to convert a goal, sending the game into double-overtime.

Four minutes into double-overtime, the Dragons' Svetlana Gudenkova drilled a shot over the goalkeeper's head to win the game, 3-2.

The Pioneers will travel to Ashland University on Sunday, October 23rd for a 1:00 p.m. match-up.
