The Malone University men's basketball team had its three-game winning streak snapped on Saturday with a 62-50 defeat in its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest at the University of Findlay.
The Pioneers (8-12 overall, 6-8 GLIAC) trailed by a narrow 50-49 margin with three and a half minutes remaining before Findlay (9-9 overall, 6-8 GLIAC) took control, outscoring Malone 12-1 the rest of the way to secure the victory.
10 straight points by Pioneer freshman forward
Mitch Spotleson gave the visitors an early 10-1 lead. Spoteson drained both of his free throws and all three of his shots from the floor in the first five minutes, including a pair of treys, to give Malone the early advantage.
The Pioneers were still up 20-12 with just over eight minutes to play before the Oilers rallied, closing out the opening stanza on an 18-4 run to pull ahead 30-24 at halftime.
Malone quickly evened the score by tallying the first six points of the second period to knot things up at 30-30. A pair of three-pointers by Findlay's Elijah Kahlig would put UF on top 48-41 midway through the period before Malone fought back, twice pulling to within one. A pair of free throws by guard
Stephen O'Daniel III made the score 48-47 with 4:40 to go. Following an Oilers' bucket, guard
Jalen Miller stepped to the line and sank two more foul shots to pull the Pioneers to within 50-49.
However the Oilers took command from that point on, draining a pair of clutch three pointers and six of seven free throws in the final three minutes to put the contest away.
In all, Findlay connected on seven of 14 attempts from beyond the arc and 13 of 18 (72.2%) foul shots. Malone, meanwhile, struggled to get on track offensively, hitting three of 22 attempts from long range (13.6%) and 15 of 24 (62.5%) from the line.
Spotleson and guard
Ben Haraway each ended the night with a team-high 10 points for the Pioneers. Miller and forward
Gus Simmers both registered six points and five rebounds while forward
Brandon Bapst also tossed in six points.
Malone will look to bounce back on Monday when the squad hosts an 8:00 p.m. contest against rival Walsh University.Â
