Box Score 2 The Malone University volleyball team split a pair of home matches in Osborne Hall Saturday, defeating GLIAC opponent Saginaw Valley State University (MI) 3-2 but losing to NCAA Div. II #6 Wheeling Jesuit University (WV) 3-0.
In the opening match of the day, Malone rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win the five-set thriller over Saginaw Valley State by the score of 20-25, 14-25, 25-17, 25-19, 17-15. Then in the final match of the day, the Pioneers dropped a 3-0 decision to non-conference foe Wheeling Jesuit by the score of 17-25, 19-25, 12-25. Wheeling Jesuit also picked up a 25-20, 25-16, 25-9 straight-set win over Saginaw Valley State in the second of the three matches on the day.
With the 1-1 record for the day's matches, Malone's record now stands at 5-8 overall and at 3-4 in the GLIAC. Saginaw Valley State, with its 0-2 mark on the afternoon, fell to 7-5 overall and to 4-3 in the conference. Wheeling Jesuit improved its overall mark to 14-1 on the year with a 2-0 record for the day.
For Malone, in the Saginaw Valley State match, outside hitters
Anna Hays and
Taylor Slauterbeck blasted 11 kills each to pace the Pioneer offense while outside hitter
Elizabeth Maczuzak followed with seven kills. Setter
Jordan Sollars tossed up 23 assists while
Brianna Clegg dished out 17 more. Â Defensively, Slauterbeck tallied 21 digs while defensive specialist/libero
Katie Hasebein added 19. Â In blocks, Maczuzak led the way with one solo and three assists while setter
Lindsay Ulfig racked up four block assists.
Then, in the Wheeling Jesuit match, Maczuzak racked up a team-best 10 kills followed by Hays with six. Setters Clegg and Sollars offered up 11 and 10 assists, respectively. Defensively, Hasebein amassed an impressive 18 digs in the three-set match.
Malone will next compete at non-conference opponent Cedarville University on Monday in a 7:00 p.m. match.
