Volleyball Tops Walsh 3-1 At Home


The Malone University volleyball team collected its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) win of the 2014 campaign Tuesday evening with a 3-1 home victory over Walsh University.  The Pioneers dropped the first set 19-25 but came back to win three straight sets, 25-19, 25-23, 25-17, to take the match.

With the win, Malone improved to 3-7 overall on the season and to 1-4 in the GLIAC while Walsh fell to 0-9 and 0-5 in conference play.

For Malone, outside hitter Taylor Slauterbeck drilled a team-best 14 kills in the contest while outside hitter Anna Hays followed with 11 kills of her own. In addition, middle hitter Elizabeth Maczuzak tallied nine kills.  The Pioneer setters' duo of Jordan Sollars and Brianna Clegged tossed up 23 and 19 assists, respectively.  For the Malone defense, defensive specialist/libero Katie Hasebein racked up 19 digs while Slauterbeck added 13 more.  In addition, Maczuzak led the team in blocks with two solos and two block assists while outside hitter Sarah Brent recorded four block assists.

Malone will next compete in another home GLIAC contest on Friday when the Pioneers host Wayne State University (3-6, 1-4 GLIAC) in a 7:00 p.m. match.
