Malone’s Basketball Teams Both Advance To Saturday’s GLIAC Semifinals; Women Travel To Wayne State, Men Face Michigan Tech

Both Malone basketball teams have reached the GLIAC's Final Four and will play semifinal round games on Saturday.

The Malone University men's and women's basketball teams have each earned spots in the semifinal round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Postseason Tournament after each squad went on the road and picked up opening-round victories Thursday night.  Malone, in its first year of NCAA postseason eligibility, is one of only two GLIAC institutions that had both basketball squads advance to the semifinals.

The Pioneer women, seeded fifth among the eight-team tournament field, travelled to fourth-seeded Ashland University and pulled out a 56-54 victory over this year's GLIAC South Division Regular Season Champions.  Thursday's win marked the second time this season that Malone knocked off the defending NCAA Division II National Champions on their home court.  The Pioneers overcame deficits at the start of each half and then used some stingy defensive play over the final four minutes to secure the two-point triumph.  Malone will travel to Wayne State (MI) University in Detroit on Saturday for a 1:07 p.m. semifinal match-up against the top-seeded Warriors.  The other women's semifinal will be played at 3:07 p.m. and features second-seeded Northern Michigan University against third-seeded Michigan Tech University.  Wayne State's Matthaei Center will host the women's championship game at 2:00 p.m. Sunday.

The eighth-seeded Malone men ventured to Michigan's Upper Peninsula and knocked off top-seeded Lake Superior State University with a 73-65 triumph.  The Lakers had claimed the GLIAC North Division Regular-Season Title, were ranked 21st in the most recent NCAA Division II National Poll and had lost just twice on their home court all season.  However, Malone used a fast start to build a 41-23 halftime lead and then held off a second-half surge by LSSU to cement the upset victory.  The Pioneers will travel to Findlay, Ohio on Saturday for a semifinal match-up against fourth-seeded Michigan Tech at 3:00 p.m.  The second-seeded Oilers, who will host the semifinals and championship game over the weekend, will take on third-seeded Walsh University at 1:00 p.m. in the other semifinal match-up.  The GLIAC men's championship game will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday. **Traffic Notice For Those Traveling To Findlay**
