The Malone University men's basketball team earned a 95-72 home win over non-conference opponent Houghton College (NY) in Malone's Osborne Hall Tuesday evening. With the win, the Pioneers improved to 2-2 overall (0-0 GLIAC) while the Highlanders dropped to 2-2 overall.
In the first half, Malone opened up its largest lead of the stanza at 25 points, with a 48-23 advantage with 4:12 remaining, before settling in for a 16-point, 52-36 lead at the intermission.
In the final period, the Highlanders got as close as 12 points early in the frame, at 55-43, before the Pioneers gained back the momentum and cruised to the 23-point victory.
For Malone, guard
Ben Haraway tossed in a team-best and early-season high 31 points on 11-of-17 shooting (including 2-of-4 from three point range) while also drilling a perfect seven-for-seven at the free throw line. He also tallied three rebounds and a game-high six steals en route to leading Malone to a new school record in steals with 22. The new mark broke the 24-year-old Malone record of 20 steals vs. Dyke College from a contest in the 1990-91 campaign.

Gus Simmers also hit twin figures for the Pioneers with 13 points (5-8 FG, 3-4 FT) while also yanking down six rebounds. Guard
Jason Miller tossed in nine points (4-6 FG, 1-2 3FG).

Mitch Spotleson paced the squad in rebounds with a game-high seven while guard
Jalen Miller tallied seven points, five steals and four rebounds in the Pioneer win.
For Houghton, Phil Pellegrino led the squad in scoring with 18 points. Tyler McQuaid and Johnathan Stowe paced the Highlanders in rebounds with seven each.
Malone will next compete in its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game of the season on Thursday, December 4th in an 8:00 p.m. contest against Michigan Tech University.
