The Malone University volleyball team opened up its 2013 campaign on a strong note on Friday at the University of West Georgia Invitational by picking up a pair of victories. The Pioneers started the day with a convincing 25-16, 25-15, 25-12 triumph over the University of West Alabama on Friday morning. Later Friday evening, Malone improved its record to 2-0 on the young season by topping the host Wolves in four sets with scores of 22-25, 25-21, 25-22, and 25-22.
The Pioneers will return to action at the UWG Invitational on Saturday with two more matches. Malone will face Georgia College at 11:30 a.m. before taking on Valdosta State (GA) University at 2:00 p.m.
In Friday's opener with West Alabama, outside hitter
Taylor Slauterbeck paced the Pioneer attack with 11 kills. Middle hitter
Lauren Townley posted five kills and four service aces. Middle hitter
Elizabeth Maczuzak added five kills and four blocks (one solo). Outside hitter
Anna Hays also registered five kills, libero
Katie Hasebein totaled a match-high 16 digs while setter
Kimberly McCracken recorded 24 assists.
In Friday's finale against West Georgia, Slauterbeck again led the way with 12 kills and 16 digs. Hays followed with 11 kills and three aces. Right-side hitter
Sarah Brent contributed 10 kills. Maczuzak notched eight kills and five blocks (two solo) with Townley chipping in eight kills and three blocks (two solo). Hasebein posted 22 digs while McCracken piled up 45 assists and 20 digs.
