Pioneers Fall in Overtime 2-1 to Tiffin

Box Score

The Malone University men's soccer team (1-6, 0-5 GLIAC) dropped a hard-fought match at home to Tiffin University in overtime on Friday 2-1.

The Dragons (5-1, 3-1 GLIAC) dictated the pace of the game for the majority of the contest, outshooting Malone 32-6. They took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute when Edison Benda's diving header beat Malone senior goalkeeper Felipe Monteiro.

The Pioneers would respond with a huge goal five minutes from halftime to make the score 1-1 at the break. Senior Josh Abend scored his third goal of the season, benefitting from a fabulous individual effort from senior Kelvin Aquino who beat two Tiffin defenders before cutting the ball to Abend for the easy finish.

Malone held firm for the ensuing 45 minutes to force overtime despite the Dragons hitting the woodwork four times during the first 90 minutes. Malone had an opportunity to win the match in the overtime when senior Felipe Delgado split Tiffin's defense with a pass to send Abend in on goal but the Tiffin keeper came out aggressively and cut off the play before Abend could reach the ball. Tiffin then ended the game in the 98th minute when Smart Osadolor's left-footed volley found the top corner of the net.

Monteiro was impressive in the losing effort, making seven saves. Abend led Malone with three of the team's six shots. The Pioneers will recuperate with a bye on Sunday before returning to the pitch next Friday, Oct. 4th for a pivotal home game with Lake Erie College at 4:00 p.m.  Live statistics will be available during the contest at http://www.sidearmstats.com/malone/msoc/
