The Malone University men's soccer team (1-2 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) grabbed an early 2-0 advantage in its home opener against Ohio Dominican University Friday afternoon, scoring on its first two shots of the game, just 14 seconds apart. However, the Pioneers eventually saw their early lead evaporate as they fell to the Panthers in their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener by a final score of 3-2.
Senior
Rubem Miranda opened the scoring in the 11th minute when he received a pass from senior
Kelvin Aquino, went in on goal one-on-one and chipped the goalkeeper. Lightning would strike twice for the Pioneers as senior
Josh Abend scored a similar goal just 14 seconds apart to give the hosts a two-goal lead. Sophomore
Sam Tonelli earned the assist on the second score with a nice seam pass.
The Panthers (1-0-1 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) pulled one back in the 19th minute when Brett Wahle converted into an open net. Ohio Dominican would then equal the score with a critical goal in the 43rd minute when Michael Fragoulis buried an opportunity created by Jacob Atkinson.
The score would remain deadlocked for much of the second stanza but took an unexpected turn for the worse for the Pioneers when Miranda was shown a straight red card in the 64th minute. It took the Panthers just 12 minutes to figure out how to use the man advantage, scoring the match-winner off a Fragoulis rebound in the 76th minute.
After weathering Malone's fast start, Ohio Dominican managed to control the rest of the match finishing with a 24 to five advantage in shots and seven to three edge in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper
Felipe Monteiro played well in net for Malone, posting a season-high nine saves. Ohio Dominican's Macklin Robinson was forced into two saves.
The Pioneers will try to return to the win column on Tuesday, Sept. 17, when they play at Walsh University at 7:00 p.m.
