The Malone University softball team (8-29, 2-23 GLIAC) saw its season draw to a close at home on Saturday with losses of 4-0 and 9-1 to Ohio Dominican University (22-26-1, 17-9 GLIAC).
Senior
Shelby Snyder, making the last start of her career in the circle, gave Malone a solid outing in game one, allowing just four runs (three earned) on 11 hits over seven innings. She managed to pitch scoreless innings in five of the seven frames and would have cruised if not for a speed bump in the third that saw three runs cross the plate.
Malone's best scoring opportunities came in the fifth and sixth innings. Freshman
Emily Isla led off the fifth with a sharp single to right field, was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt and advance to third on another single from Snyder.
However, fortune fell against the Pioneers when freshman
Marionna Cane laced a line drive directly at the rightfielder and freshman
Heather Papp grounded out to end the inning. Malone put two more runners on in the sixth but saw the threat terminated when Isla bounced out to first.
Freshmen
Lisa Cordova and
Amy Donze joined Isla and Snyder as the only Malone hitters to record hits in the game.
Game two started promising for Malone. The Pioneers took the lead in the top of the second inning thanks to some well-executed small ball. Isla led off the inning with a walk before sophomore
Stephanie Byrne followed suit by ripping a line drive to centerfield. Both runners advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt from Snyder, setting the stage for Cane, who came through with a shot to left field to plate the game's first run.
The lead held up for an inning before Ohio Dominican took advantage of two Malone defensive blunders in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-1 lead. The Panthers would add a run in the fourth and four more in the sixth to end the game via the run rule.
Byrne led Malone at the dish going 2-for-3. Donze took the loss in the circle, yielding nine runs (four earned) in six innings. She did manage to whiff six Panthers on the day.
