The Malone University softball team couldn't sustain enough offense to record a win at Saginaw Valley State University on Sunday, dropping game one, 8-0, and game two, 3-0.
The Pioneers were held to just one hit, which came off the bat of freshman
Amy Donze, in game one. Senior pitcher
Shelby Snyder held Saginaw Valley hitless through the first two innings before giving up five runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Cardinals would tack on one more in the fourth and two in the fifth to cement the victory in five innings.
Malone would get a strong pitching performance from Donze in game two. She worked the complete seven innings giving up just three runs on eight hits, while striking out six.
Saginaw Valley State's Amanda Kimes was the only Cardinal to solve Donze's pitching. She drove in all three runs in the game, the first two on a two-out, two-RBI single through the left side in the second inning and the last on a solo home run in the seventh inning.
Malone's best scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Snyder got things rolling with a one-out single up the middle. Junior
Emily Soricelli drew a walk two batters later to put runners on first and second with two outs. Freshman
Lisa Cordova followed with a clutch two-out single to left field but Soricelli was thrown out at second after she rounded the bag too far to end the inning.
The highlight of the day for the Pioneers came in the top of the sixth when their defense turned an unheralded triple play. With runners on first and second and no outs, the Saginaw hitter bounced a ball to freshman shortstop
Alexa Holztrager. Holztrager recorded the first out by flipping to second base for the force out. The runner on second tried to score on the play but was thrown out at the plate. The third out was recorded when the hitter, who reached on a fielder's choice, tried to advance to second and was subsequently gunned down.
Snyder paced Malone with two hits, including a double in the seventh inning. Cordova and freshman
Heather Papp added the other hits.
After a busy week of softball, the Pioneers will now take advantage of some time off over the next few days before wrapping up their season at home next weekend with a pair of doubleheaders against Tiffin University (4/26) and Ohio Dominican University (4/27).
