The Malone University softball team dropped a pair of contests at the University of Findlay on Thursday by scores of 16-2 and 10-1.
Things started promising for the Pioneers as they jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in game 1, just three hitters into the contest. Freshman
Lisa Cordova and junior
Katy Carr opened the game with walks before freshman
Alexa Holztrager cleared the bases with a double.
Findlay would mount a charge scoring three runs in the second inning and two more in the third. The score remained tight up until the bottom of the fourth inning when Findlay exploded for 11 runs to put the game out of reach.
Holztrager had both of the Malone hits in the game; in addition to her double she also added a triple in the third inning.
Malone hung tough with the Oilers in game 2 before being unraveled by a five-run sixth inning. The Pioneers trailed 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning when freshman
Heather Papp singled to lead off the inning. She would come around to score two batters later when Cordova's ground ball to the shortstop was thrown away.
However, the Oilers' offense produced a pair of runs in the fourth inning and six more in the fifth to win 10-1. Holztrager and sophomore
Stephanie Byrne joined Papp in the hit column.
Malone will head to Michigan for a pair of doubleheaders this weekend. The first is scheduled for Saturday at 1:00 pm against Wayne State University.
