Tina Oprean Becomes Malone's First-Ever NCAA All-American Placing 38th At NCAA Division II National Championships

Senior Tina Oprean earned a 38th-place finish over the 6K course in a time of 21:47.9 at the NCAA Division II National Championships Saturday to become Malone's first-ever NCAA All-American in any sport.

Malone University cross country runner Tina Oprean has made Pioneer athletics history as she became the school's first-ever NCAA All-American in any sport by placing 38th in a time of 21.47.9 at the NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships in Spokane, Washington Saturday.

Oprean qualified as an individual for the NCAA national event after placing third overall at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championships in Kenosha, Wisconsin two weeks ago.

At the Plantes Ferry Sports Complex in Spokane, Oprean covered the 6K course in impressive fashion as she finished among the top 40 runners in the national championship race, with 244 athletes competing, to earn the prestigiuos and ground-breaking All-America honor for Malone University athletics. Her time was just one second faster than the 40th and final All-American finisher who posted a time of 21.48.9. 

It didn't take long for this first-ever Malone NCAA Division II All-America honor, though, as the 2013-14 academic year is the first year in which Malone is a full member of NCAA Division II and thus eligible to compete in NCAA national competition.  

Jennifer Agnew of the University of Mary (ND) captured the individual national title in a time of 20:50.7 while Grand Valley State University (MI) won the team national championship with 54 points.  Adams State University (CO) finished second with 91 points.
