The Malone University men's soccer team (2-6, 1-5 GLIAC), backed by a pair of first-half goals from senior
Josh Abend, picked up its first conference win of the season over Lake Erie 2-1 on Friday evening.
Abend kicked off the scoring in the 12th minute with a sensational bicycle kick goal. His initial shot was stopped by the Storm keeper but the rebound popped up over Abend's head, prompting the acrobatic finish.
He was back at it again in the 34th minute, this time rounding the goalkeeper after a terrific pass from senior
Kelvin Aquino and slotting home a left-footed finish.
The Storm (4-4-1, 3-4 GLIAC) made things interesting late in the second half, pulling within one with five minutes to play on a Ryan Gibson goal. The visitors had a final chance to send the game into overtime but Stewart Bath's free kick in the final minute was stopped by the Malone wall.
Junior
Ryan Brumbaugh collected an assist on the first goal for his first point of the year. Lake Erie outshot Malone 21-15 for the match and held a 14-2 advantage in corners. Senior
Felipe Monteiro made six saves to pick up his second win of the season. Malone will try to run its win streak to two when the squad travels to the University of Findlay on Sunday to face the Oilers at 3:00 p.m.
