Delgado's Late Goal Helps Malone Secure a 2-2 Draw with Northwood

Box Score

Senior Felipe Delgado scored a game-tying goal with 16 seconds left in regulation to give the Malone University men's soccer team (2-8-1, 1-7-1 GLIAC) a dramatic 2-2 draw with Northwood University (MI) (4-5-1, 4-4-1 GLIAC) on Sunday.

The Timberwolves' Adam Thomas opened the scoring six minutes in, splitting two Pioneer defenders and deftly chipping the ball over Malone goalkeeper Felipe Monteiro. The home side evened the match in the 17th minute when sophomore Sam Tonelli head home a corner kick delivered by Delgado.

Northwood regained the lead in the 52nd minute when Keaton Levock converted a penalty kick. It looked like that goal would stand as the match-winner but in the final minute senior Josh Abend broke loose down the left flank and cut a ball back to an open Tonelli at point blank range. Tonelli scuffed the shot but it rolled right to Delgado who composedly finished.

Delgado had Malone's best chance in overtime when he got behind Northwood's defense but his left-footed crack at goal narrowly missed the far post. Northwood too had a golden opportunity in the second overtime when the ball fell to Gino Pasqualli but his shot from close range went wide.

Malone outshot Northwood 23-19 for the match with both teams sending six of their shot attempts on goal. Malone also enjoyed a 9-3 margin in corner kicks. Tonelli led Malone with six shots while Delgado took four of his own. Monteiro made four stops in goal for the Pioneers.

Malone will travel to Ohio Dominican University on Friday, October 18th to take on the Panthers in a 4:30 p.m. contest. ODU won the first meeting of the year between the two sides 3-2 after Malone could not hold a 2-0 halftime lead.
