The Malone University men's soccer team was upended by Walsh University in their home opener 3-0 on Saturday.
Malone's exuberance to play their cross town rival was tamed by a pair of early first half goals. Adam Greenwood put the Cavaliers on the board in the 10th minute with a scintillating free kick that curled around the wall and just past the outstretched hand of junior goalkeeper
Felipe Monteiro. Malone would find themselves in a two goal hole just four minutes later when Jeremy Dietrich got behind the Pioneer defense and beat Monteiro.
The Pioneers would come close to cutting the deficit in half on a couple of occasions at the end of the half. First, Cavalier goalkeeper Mike Kelley stoned junior
Rubem Miranda from point blank range and then junior
Felipe Delgado's follow up effort sailed over the bar of an open net.
Jordan Semple would put the game on ice in the 51st minute when he cut inside to beat his defender and powered a shot past a sprawling Monteiro. Both teams would trade scoring chances the rest of the way with neither having success beating the opposition's keeper.
Miranda led Malone recording five shots over the 90 minutes. Junior
Kelvin Aquino was also dangerous leading the team with three shots on target.
Felipe Monteiro had a busy day in goal making 9 saves for the game. The Pioneers outshot Walsh 21-20 but the Cavaliers put 12 of their shots on goal to only 6 for Malone. The Pioneers held the decisive edge in corner kicks 10-3 but were unable to convert on any of their tries. Malone will hit the road to take on Ashland University on Sept. 14th.
