The Malone University volleyball team opened play at the Lock Haven (PA) University Tournament on Friday by tallying a 1-1 record in contests against the host Lady Eagles and Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College. In the Pioneers' first match of the day, Lock Haven held on for a five-set triumph on its home court, rallying back in the fifth frame after dropping sets three and four (17-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-23, 9-15). Malone then bounced back in its second match, downing the Battlers in four sets by scores of 23-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-21.
Middle hitter
Hannah Haver led the way for the Pioneers (1-2 overall) in the opener by racking up 18 kills and three service aces. Middle hitter
Diana Wallace posted 12 kills and three blocks (one solo). Fellow middle hitter
Lauren Townley added nine kills and four blocks (one solo). Setter
Jackie Schwamberger notched five kills, 46 assists, five digs and three blocks (one solo). Outside hitter
Anna Hays and libero
Allison Kirby also made significant contributions as Hays ripped eight kills while Kirby scooped up 11 digs.
In the second match of the day versus Alderson-Broaddus, outside hitter
Taylor Slauterbeck came through with 15 kills, seven digs and two service aces. Townley registered 11 kills followed by Wallace with 10. Haver fell just short of another double-digit kill total, finishing the match with nine.
Malone will return to action at the Lock Haven Tournament on Saturday morning with a 9:00 a.m. contest against Long Island (NY) University Post. The Pioneers will then conclude play at the event with a 1:00 p.m. match-up versus Dominican (NY) College.
