Pioneers Shutout by Ferris State 3-0

Box Score
The Malone University women's soccer team (1-7-1, 0-4-1 GLIAC) was upended by Ferris State 3-0 Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs (4-3-3, 3-1-2 GLIAC) dictated the majority of the play, outshooting the Pioneers 36-5, but Malone hung tough and was within a goal until a couple of late goals sunk them for good.

Ferris State took a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute on a bit of a bizarre goal. Hilary Braun struck a shot from 30 yards out that was just out of the reach of goalkeeper Angie Nutial's fingertips. The shot, however, was a tad high and hit the bottom of the crossbar only to bounce off of Nutial's shoulder. Nutial corralled the ball but unfortunately the linesman ruled the ball had crossed the goal line.

The Pioneers would keep Ferris State off the scoreboard for the majority of the second half and came inches away from tying the game in the 73rd minute. Defender Kaitlin Hanlon chested down a ball at the back post from a corner kick and volleyed a shot that was cleared off the line by a Bulldog defender. The rebound came back to senior Jasmine Evans who cracked a shot only a couple yards from goal but the ball was blocked by a crowd of players on the line.

Five minutes later, Ferris State capitalized on a similar play when Abby Meirndorf volleyed home a rebound from a deflected shot. Casey Shauman would add a goal in the 81st minute to make the final score 3-0.

Nutial split halves in goal with sophomore Sam Soeder. Nutial made 6 saves in the first half, while Soeder made 5 stops. Malone will search for their first GLIAC win at Ashland on Friday Oct. 5 at 5:00 pm.
