Men's Soccer Sam Erchick's left-footed cross set up the game's only goal

Rubio’s Late Game Dramatics Lift Pioneers over Oilers

Box Score

Nicolas Rubio scored a winning goal in the 76th minute and the Malone University men's soccer team's backline recorded their third consecutive shutout to propel the Pioneers (4-4, 4-3 GLIAC) over the University of Findlay 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Rubio's goal was the result of some strong work down the left flank from senior Sam Erchick. Erchick then sent in a cross that was met by the head of Rubio, who powered a header past the Findlay keeper. Senior goalkeeper Felipe Monteiro came up big in the 81st minute, staving off the Oilers' (4-5, 2-5 GLIAC) best scoring chance by deflecting Shane McGee's effort just wide of the post.

Although Findlay outshot Malone 18 to 10 on the evening,  many of the Oilers' attempts were handily fended off by Monteiro, who recorded his third consecutive shutout after being held without one for the first five games of the season. Junior forward Kelvin Aquino gave Findlay's defense fits all day long as he paced the Pioneers with three shots. Malone will hope to keep its four game win streak alive when the squad plays an out of conference home match against Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 3:30 pm.
