The Malone University volleyball team dropped a hard-fought, four-set match at home to Hillsdale (MI) College on Friday evening by scores of 20-25, 22-25, 26-24, and 22-25.
The Pioneers fell to 7-5 overall and 3-3 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play with the loss. Hillsdale, meanwhile, improved to 5-9 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
After pulling out the 26-24 win in set number three, Malone grabbed a 10-7 advantage early on in the fourth frame. Hillsdale then rattled off six straight points to pull in front 13-10. The Pioneers kept things close over the remainder of the set, but were unable to regain the lead as the Chargers went on to secure the victory by the 25-22 margin.
Six Malone players posted double-digit kill totals, led by right side hitter
Diana Wallace, who ended the night with 16. Outside hitter
Elizabeth Maczuzak added 14 kills. Fellow outside hitter
Taylor Slauterbeck posted 13 kills and 15 digs while middle hitter
Lauren Townley registered 12 kills. Setter
Jackie Schwamberger notched 50 assists and nine digs. Middle hitter
Hannah Haver tallied eight kills while libero
Allison Kirby racked up a career-high 23 digs.
Hillsdale piled up 10 solo blocks and 14 block assists on the evening. The Chargers also compiled a .203 attack percentage compared to .189 for the Pioneers.
Caitlin Kopmeyer led the way for the Chargers with 16 kills. Marissa Owen tallied 25 digs while Haylee Booms totaled eight blocks (three solo).
