Volleyball Drops Four-Set Contest To Grand Valley State

Middle hitter Lauren Townley notched 11 kills and two blocks during Friday's match at GVSU.

The Malone University volleyball team had its six-game winning streak snapped on Friday night with a four-set loss at Grand Valley State (MI) University.  The Pioneers took the first set of the evening 25-19 before the host Lakers fought back to claim the match by winning the next three frames by scores of 25-12, 25-12, and 25-23.  With the defeat, Malone slipped to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play while GVSU improved to 8-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

Outside hitter Taylor Slauterbeck paced the Pioneer attack on Friday night with 12 kills.  Middle hitter Lauren Townley added 11 kills and two blocks (one solo).  Middle hitter Hannah Haver also reached double digits in kills with 10.  Setter Jackie Schwamberger dished out 37 assists to go with nine digs and three kills.  Libero Allison Kirby also made significant contributions with 15 digs.

Abby Aiken led the way for GVSU with 17 kills.  Sacha Gill added a match-high 17 digs.

The Pioneers will be back in action on Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. match at NCAA Division II #24 Ferris State University (8-3 overall, 2-1 GLIAC).  The Bulldogs will provide live video and statistics of the contest at http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/ferris.portal#
