Box Score

The Malone University softball team suffered a tough 6-5 defeat in its road matchup with Cedarville University on Saturday afternoon.  The Pioneers entered the bottom of the seventh holding a 5-2 lead but the Yellow Jackets managed to rally back for the walk-off victory, plating four runs in the frame with the help of four base hits and a pair of Malone errors.

The Pioneers had been scheduled to participate in a total of four games over the weekend as part of the Cedarville Softball Classic.  However, thunderstorms and heavy rains washed out both of Friday's contests.  Saturday's opener at Urbana University was also called off due to soggy field conditions.

Malone's overall record fell to 4-14 following Saturday's tough loss while Cedarville improved to 15-10.

The Pioneers grabbed the early lead with three runs in the top of the first.  Centerfielder Megan Lane led off the game with double to left-center before coming around to score on a double to rightfield by second baseman Desi Givens.  After shortstop Kristen Atzenhoefer reached on a Cedarville error, first baseman Lauren Hershberger chased home two more runs with a two-out double down the leftfield line.

The Yellow Jackets plated unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth and the bottom of the sixth, but Givens answered back each time for Malone, ripping an RBI single in the top of the fifth and an RBI double in the top of the seventh to make the score 5-2.

The Yellow Jackets opened the bottom of the seventh with three straight base hits to pull within one at 5-4.  A Pioneer error and a sacrifice bunt then put runners at second and third with one out.  Cedarville shortstop Kelsey Wilson tied the game up with a single to left.  Yellow Jacket leftfielder Shelby Young then brought home the winning run with a fielder's choice.

Givens paced the Malone offense, going 3-for-4 at the plate.  With Saturday's peformance, the freshman has now extended her current hitting streak to 10 straight games while raising her batting average to an incredible .500 (28 hits in 56 at-bats this season).  Lane added two hits and two runs scored from the leadoff spot.

Pioneer pitcher Nicol Chesley suffered the loss (1-5) after giving up the go-ahead run in the seventh.  Courtnie Spain tossed a complete game to earn the victory (7-3) for the Yellow Jackets.

Malone will look to bounce back on Tuesday when the squad returns to action with a 3:00 p.m. home doubleheader against local rival Walsh University.
