Women's Track & Field Places Second At Wheeling Jesuit Invitational, Men Fifth; Two Pioneers Collect Individual Event Wins

Sophomore Tina Oprean captured the 1500 meters in a time of 4:46.15 and led Malone to a 1-2-4-5 finish in the event.


Final Results

The Malone University women's track & field team placed second, among 21 teams, at the Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University Invitational Friday and Saturday while the men's team finished fifth among an 18-team field.  In addition, each Pioneer squad had one individual winner – in the women's 1500 meters and the men's 200 meters.

In the women's meet, Malone posted 90 points for its runner-up finish as Seton Hill (PA) University won the meet with 128.25.  West Virginia Wesleyan placed third (85.08), Wheeling Jesuit was fourth (75.50) and Fredonia State (NY) University rounded out the top five (55).

In the men's meet, the Pioneers tallied 69 points for their fifth-place finish as Seton Hill also captured the men's title with 116.5 points. Wheeling Jesuit was second (96), West Virginia Wesleyan took third (85) and Fredonia State placed fourth (84). 

For the Malone women's team, the distance unit paced the overall team with excellent efforts in the 1500, 3000 and 5000 meter races.

Among a 42-woman 1500 meters, the Pioneers posted an impressive 1-2-4-5 finish as Tina Oprean captured first place in the event in 4:46.15 while Mattison Rankin took the runner-up spot in 4:47.50.  Emily Tomei placed fourth in 4:50.04 and Erin Bauer finished fifth in 4:50.70.  In addition, Stacy Cameron came in 12th overall in 5:04.90.

In the 3000 meters, Malone had three of the top six finishers, among 24 competitors, as Hannah Hartzler led the team with a third-place finish in a time of 10:43.79 while Sara Polatas took fourth in 10:44.90 and Madison Schuler placed sixth in 10:52.51.

In the 5000-meter race, Tynae Wilson notched a second-place finish among 20 runners in 18:34.83.

Tayler Carpenter paced Malone in the 100-meter prelims, posting a time of 13.55 seconds to place 14th among 51 entrants, but did not advance to the finals.  Laura Page also competed in the prelims and finished 19th at 13.66.

In the 200-meter dash, Carpenter led Malone with a sixth-place effort among 48 runners in a time of 27.26 while Rachel Pae was next in 27.72 (13th). In addition, Ashley Spurlock took 14th in 27.87 and Emily Fisher placed 23rd in 28.78.

Among 34 runners in the 400 meters, Fisher paced Malone with a solid fifth-place finish in 1:01.00 while Pae followed in eighth-place in 1:02.43.  In addition, Spurlock pocketed a time of 1:03.47 for 13th place.

In the 800 meters, Katie King finished second overall among 49 runners in a time of 2:19.92 while Rankin came in third in 2:20.36. Oprean took fifth in 2:23.82.

Melissa Wohlheter posted a time of 17.53 seconds in the 100-meter hurdle prelims and qualified as one of eight finalists among 20 entrants.  In the finals, she placed eighth in 18.40.

In the 400-meter hurdle prelims, Wohlheter posted a time of 1:11.42 while Allyssa Hostetler collected a time of 1:14.24.

In the 4x400 meter relay, the Malone A team of Fisher, Pae, Becky Neitzel and King posted the best time among three Pioneer teams in the race with a third-place time of 4:10.60 among 19 squads entered.

In field events, Kelsey Brobst paced the team in the javelin with a toss of 73' 9” while Lyndsey Bates followed with a throw of 67' 2”.

In the long jump, Carpenter posted a leap of 15' 0.75” to tie for ninth place among 27 jumpers.  In addition, she also cleared a height of 4' 7” in the high jump.

Page finished fourth among 17 entrants in the pole vault event, clearing the bar at 10' 0”.

In the shot put, Bates paced Malone with a 14th-place toss of 32' 8”, among 43 entrants, while Samantha Soeder was 20th at 31' 3”. In addition, Brobst recorded a throw of 30' 3” for 22nd place.

In the discus event, Bates led four Pioneer entrants with a throw of 99' 7” for a 17th-place finish among 45 contestants. Soeder followed in 19th (98' 7”), Katherine Mansill finished 20th (98' 4”) and Brobst was 30th (84' 2”).

For the Malone men's team, Kyle Wagner finished third among six athletes competing in the decathlon (held on both Friday and Saturday) with a total of 5377 points.

The sprint squads for the men's team had a solid showing as Malik Felton paced three Pioneer runners in the 100-meter dash prelims with a fifth-best time of 11.13 seconds, among 44 competitors, to qualify for the finals.  Luke Ford and Tony Davis also competed in the prelims, pocketing times of 11.97 and 12.29, respectively.  In the finals, Felton finished third, crossing the finish line in 11.02 seconds.

Felton had an even better finish in the 200 meters as he won the event, among 34 sprinters, in 21.82 seconds while Eric Barto was next for Malone in 11th (23:23). Ford and Davis were close behind with times of 24:43 and 24:54, respectively.

Barto was the lone runner for Malone in the 400-meter dash but placed an impressive third, in a time of 50.73 seconds, among a 24-man field.

In the 800 meters, Matt Hendrix led the way with a fourth-place finish, among 43 runners, in a time of 1:55.01 while Billy Latta was 10th in 2:00.80.  In addition, Casey Meeson finished in 2:06.39.

Philip Palmer was the lone runner for Malone in the 400-meter hurdles but finished second, among 19 entrants, in a time of 56.33.

Gage Black and Casey Meeson represented Malone in the 1500 meters and finished 14th (4:19.90) and 21st (4:26.43), respectively, among 33 runners.

In the 3000 meters, Garret Gleckler led the team with a 13th-place finish among 22 runners in a time of 9:42.92 followed by Lucas Shroades in 14th at 9:43.29.

With only two Pioneer runners in the 5000 meters, Malone posted a 2-3 finish among 32 entrants as Matt McConnell finished as the runner-up in 15:22.24 while Nick Meeson was third in 15:24.59.

Doug French competed in the 3000-meter steeplechase and posted a time of 10:44.51.

In the 4x400 meter relay, the team of Barto, Palmer, Hendrix and Latta posted a time of 3:28.76 to finish fifth among 13 teams.

The Malone men had limited competitors in the field events as Matt Lautanen finished third among 12 jumpers in the high jump with a leap of 6' 3”.

In addition, Caleb Celuch competed in the javelin and recorded a throw of 157' 6” for a seventh-place finish among 31 contestants.

The Malone men's and women's teams will next compete in the John Homon Open, hosted by the University of Mt. Union, on April 6th.
