At the Stark County Challenge track & field meet Saturday in North Canton, Ohio (hosted by Walsh University), the Malone men's team finished second among three teams while the Pioneer women took third among their three-team field.
The University of Mt. Union captured the men's meet with 171 points while Malone finished second with 101.50 points. Walsh was third with 92.50 points.
In the women's meet, Mt. Union also won with 134 points as Walsh took second with 128 points and Malone finished third with 110 points.
For the men, event winners included double winner
Malik Felton in the 100-meter dash (10.98) and the 200-meter dash (21.47),
Matt Hendrix in the 800 meters (1:58.43),
Caleb Celuch in the javelin (171' 0”) and the men's 4x400-meter relay team of
J.B. DeRosa, Hendrix,
Billy Latta and
Philip Palmer (3:29.70).
Event winners for the women's team included double winner
Tayler Carpenter in the high jump (4' 11”) and in the long jump (15' 3.50”),
Katie King in the 800 meters (2:23.51),
Tina Oprean in the 5000 meters (19:03.50) and
Madison Schuler in the 3000-meter steeplechase (13:48.70).
Second-place finishers for the men's squad included
Anthony Lombardi and
Matt Lautanen in the high jump (6' 4.75”), Palmer in the 400-meter hurdles (56.89),
Nick Meeson in the 5000 meters (16:05.90) and the men's 4x100-meter relay team (43.56).
Second-place finishers for the women were Carpenter in the 100-meter dash (13.23),
Mattison Rankin in the 800 meters (2:26.42),
Sara Polatas in the 5000 meters (19:12.00),
Courtney Armsey in the high jump (tied; 4' 9”),
Lyndsey Bates in the shot put (37' 9.25”), the women's 4x100-meter relay team (52.30) and the women's 4x400-meter relay unit (4:13.03).
Third-place finishers for the men included
Matt McConnell in the 1500 meters (4:06.00),
Juho Hietanen in the javelin (156' 8”),
Tom Reed in the shot put (47' 2.25”) and Celuch in the pole vault (11' .25”).
Third-place finishers for the women were Carpenter in the 200-meter dash (26.61),
Emily Fisher in the 400 meters (1:01.19),
Erin Bauer in the 1500 meters (4:56.00) and
Hannah Hartzler in the 5000 meters (19:21.00).
For the Pioneer women, Carpenter paced the team with 23 points in four individual events (high jump, long jump, 100 meters, 200 meters) while Felton led the men's squad in points, scoring 14 points in two individual events (100 meters, 200 meters).
The Malone teams will next compete at the Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University Invitational next Friday and Saturday, March 23-24.
