Results
The Malone University men's and women's indoor track & field teams competed at the NCAA Division II Challenge at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio Friday and Saturday. The Pioneer men finished 11th among 22 teams scoring points while the Malone women placed 19th among 21 teams scoring.
The Malone men tallied 23.50 points as Ashland University won the men's meet with 100 points. Tiffin University placed second with 64 points while the University of Findlay finished third with 57 points. Alabama-Huntsville came in fourth with 51 points and Hillsdale (MI) College rounded out the top five with 49 points.
In the women's meet, Malone scored 5.60 points as Ashland also won the women's meet with 79.60 points. Tiffin was a close second with 76 points and Hillsdale was third with 73 points. Ferris State (MI) University came in fourth with 54 points and Alabama-Huntsville rounded out the top five with 45 points.
On Friday,
Courtney Armsey competed in the pentathlon for the Pioneer women's squad and finished seventh overall with 2620 points.
For the women on Saturday, the distance medley relay team of
Mattison Rankin,
Emily Fisher,
Katie King and
Tina Oprean posted a time of 12:27.28 for a fourth-place finish among six teams.
In the 5000 meters,
Hannah Hartzler led three Malone runners among a 26-woman field and finished ninth in 18:31.71.
Sara Polatas was 15th in 18:53.43 while
Diana Furey posted a time of 20:08.82. In the one-mile run,
Stacy Cameron crossed the finish line in 5:26.89 to place 18th among a 39-woman field.
Armsey notched a time of 9.57 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles prelims but narrowly missed qualifying for the finals.
In the 200 meters, Armsey led four Malone student athletes with a time of 27.72 seconds while
Tayler Carpenter was close behind in 27.82.
Meghan Miller came in at 28.66 while
Ashley Spurlock posted a time of 28.72.
Among 49 runners in the 400-meter races,
Rachel Pae paced the Pioneers with a time of 1:02.95. Fisher followed with a time of 1:03.54 while Miller and Spurlock collected times of 1:03.82 and 1:05.06, respectively.
Five Malone runners competed in the 800 meters and were led by Rankin who turned in a time of 2:21.48. A margin of just over three seconds separated the other four Pioneers as King followed in 2:22.32,
Becky Neitzel finished in 2:22.66,
Emily Tomei tallied a 2:23.42 and Oprean came in at 2:24.59.
In field events,
Laura Page cleared the pole vault bar at a height of 10' .75” to place in a tie for seventh among 15 entrants. Carpenter represented Malone in the long jump and launched herself to a mark of 14' 9.75”.
Katherine Mansill and
Kelsey Brobst competed for the Pioneers in the shot put and posted nearly identical marks of 30' 6.5” and 30' 5”, respectively.
For the Pioneer men,
Lepear Smith turned in a solid performance in the 60-meter hurdles by finishing fourth among 29 entrants in a time of 8.30 seconds.
Nick Meeson also pocketed an impressive fourth-place finish among 35 runners in the 3000 meters in a time of 8:40.32 while
Matt McConnell recorded a time of 8:59.52.
Four Pioneer men competed in the 60-meter dash as Smith was the lone Malone entrant to qualify for the finals after posting a time of 7.09 in the prelims. In the finals, Smith blazed to a 7.02 for eighth place. In the prelims,
Malik Felton recorded a time of 7:13,
Jason Keniston crossed the finish line in 7:44 and
Luke Ford tallied a time of 7:71.
Five runners competed in the 200 meter dash for the Pioneers and were led by Felton in 22.61 who placed 16th among 67 contestants. Other Pioneers, with times, included Smith in 22.86,
Philip Palmer in 23.62,
Eric Barto in 24.11 and Ford in 25.42.
In the 400 meters, Palmer and Barto represented the Pioneers and clocked times of 51.47 and 52.05, respectively.
Matt Hendrix paced three Malone runners in the 800-meter event in 1:56.21, the 13th-fastest time among 52 runners.
Billy Latta followed in 2:00.51 while
Garret Gleckler came in at 2:11.88.
The distance medley relay unit of Latta, Palmer, Hendrix and Meeson clocked a time of 10:30.27.
Gage Black and
Lucas Shroades represented Malone in the 5000 meters with times of 16:12.96 and 16:55.21, respectively.
In field events,
Anthony Lombardi and
Matt Lautanen led the way for Malone in the high jump by tying for a sixth-place finish among 14 jumpers as each man posted a mark of 6' 3.25”.
Tom Reed was the lone Pioneer entrant in the shot put as he finished a solid eighth among 25 throwers with a toss of 45' 6.25”.
The Malone teams will next compete in the Kent State University Tune Up Meet on Saturday, February 18th at 9:00 a.m.
