Box Score
The Malone University women's basketball team fell 72-60 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Northwood (MI) University on Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers (5-2 overall, 2-2 GLIAC) jumped out to an early 12-3 advantage in the contest and then stretched their lead to 24-16 on a lay-up by guard
Logan Pastor with 7:30 remaining in the first half. However, a pair of free throws by forward
Deborah Simmers and a made foul shot by Pastor were the only points Malone could muster over the remainder of the period. With the Pioneers struggling to get on track offensively, the Timberwolves (5-3 overall, 3-1 GLIAC) went on the attack, closing out the first half on a 26-3 scoring run to take a commanding 42-27 advantage into the locker room at intermission.
A 15-5 Pioneer surge, fueled by a pair of treys by Simmers, pulled Malone to within 58-51 midway through the second stanza, but that was as close as the visitors would get. Northwood took advantage of its frequent trips to the free throw line throughout the contest, hitting 26 of its 30 total attempts (86.7%) from the charity stripe, including 13 of 16 in the second half to thwart the Pioneers' comeback attempts.
Forward
Lindsy Snyder led the way for Malone with 15 points. Simmers added 14 points off the bench while Pastor tossed in 12 points, grabbed 11 boards, and handed out five assists. Point guard
Sydnee Penn also made solid contributions with six points and five rebounds.
Lauren Robak came off the bench to register a game-high 16 points for Northwood. Guard Rachel Church followed with 14 while Sarah Susan tossed in 12.
On the afternoon, Malone knocked down 33.9% (20 of 59) of its shots from the field, 40% (six of 15) of its threes and 66.7% (14 of 21) of its free throws. The Timberwolves countered by hitting 32.3% (20 of 62) of their field goals, including 25% (six of 24) of their attempts from beyond the three-point arc.
After tallying a 1-1 record on their weekend trip to Lake Superior State (MI) University and Northwood, the Pioneers will return to action at home next Saturday (Dec. 15) with a 3:00 p.m. GLIAC contest against Saginaw Valley State (MI) University (2-4 overall, 1-2 GLIAC).
