Hot Shooting Propels Pioneers Over Lake Superior State 90-83

The Malone University men's basketball team shot 48% from the field, hit 11 of 21 three-pointers (52%) and connected on 21 of 24 from the foul line (88%) Thursday night to down Lake Superior State University 90-83 and record its first road win of the season.

The Pioneers (4-2, 2-1 GLIAC) jumped out to an early lead thanks to forward Vince Kazmierczak, who scored 13 of Malone's first 17 points. The Pioneers held a 28-22 lead at the under five media timeout but closed the half on a 9-2 run, culminated with a Cory Veldhuizen layup, to lead 37-24 at intermission.

Malone would use an 11-2 run early in the second half, capped by a Che Richardson three-pointer, to catapult the lead to 19 points at 51-32. The Lakers (2-4, 0-3 GLIAC) would begin to chip away at the lead, pulling all the way back to within four after a four-point play by Alex Williams with 7:50 to play. However, Malone would counter the charge with a Kazmierczak three and two free-throws by Isiah Elliott to bump the lead back to nine. Steady foul shooting from Malone down the stretch made sure Lake Superior State never got closer than seven points.

Four Pioneers scored in double figures, spearheaded by Elliott'a game-high 19 points, six rebounds and four assists. Kazmierczak scored 18 on four of six shooting from beyond the arc, Veldhuizen added 16 points and seven rebounds and Richardson chipped in with 14 points and six assists.

Alex Williams matched Elliot with 19 points for Lake Superior State.  Jorddan Myrick added 15 points and nine boards.  As a team, the Lakers hit 31 of 65 (47.7%) field-goal attempts, six of 19 (31.6%) three-pointers and 15 of 21 (71.4%) free throws.

The Pioneers will try to complete a perfect road trip on Saturday when they face Northwood (MI) University (2-5 overall, 1-2 GLIAC) at 1:00 p.m.  The Timberwolves will provide live video (fee), audio and statistics during the contest.  Click here for links to each.
