Volleyball Splits Pair Of Matches On Day Two Of NCCAA National Tournament; Pioneers Conclude Season With 23-13 Overall Record

Setter Jackie Schwamberger notched a combined total of 71 assists during Friday's matches. The senior ended her four-year Pioneer career with 5512 assists - the second highest total in program history.

The Malone University volleyball team wrapped up pool play at the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) National Tournament in Kissimmee, Florida on Friday by tallying a 1-1 record in contests against Shorter (GA) University and Bethel (IN) College.

The Pioneers, seeded seventh among the event's 10 teams, opened the day with a 25-21, 16-25, 19-25, 14-25 defeat to second-seeded Shorter.  Malone managed to bounce back against Bethel, though, recording a 25-21, 25-17, 19-25, 25-22 triumph over the sixth-seeded Pilots.

The Pioneers concluded the first two days of competition at the NCCAA National Tournament with a 1-3 mark in pool play.  Despite not advancing to Saturday's semifinals, Malone ended its 2012 campaign with a solid 23-13 overall record, giving head coach Tanya Hockman 20 or more wins for the 13th time in her 14-year coaching career.

Right-side hitter Diana Wallace led the way for the Pioneer attack in Friday's opener against Shorter by ripping a team-high 10 kills. Middle hitter Lauren Townley added eight kills and six blocks (three solo).   Outside hitter Taylor Slauterbeck posted seven kills and a match-high 17 digs while setter Jackie Schwamberger tallied five kills and 32 assists.

Against Bethel in Friday's finale, Slauterbeck paced Malone with 13 kills.  Middle hitter Hannah Haver followed with 10 kills and three blocks (one solo).  Townley chipped in with eight kills while Wallace and outside hitter Anna Hays ripped seven kills apiece.  Schwamberger dished out 39 assists in the victory while libero Katie Hasebein also made solid contributions with a team-high 15 digs.
