Felipe Monteiro 2011 action vs Muskingum - 1

Men's Soccer Junior Felipe Monteior dazzled in goal making 10 saves for the shutout

Pioneers Battle #21 Saginaw Valley to 0-0 Stalemate

Box Score
110 minutes in the pouring rain was not enough to separate the Malone University men's soccer team and NCAA DII #21 Saginaw Valley State, as the sides battled to a 0-0 draw on Sunday at Pioneer Field.

Despite the 0-0 score line, the match proved end to end from start to finish as both sides had numerous opportunities to capitalize on scoring chances. Junior goalkeeper Felipe Monteiro was phenomenal in goal for the Pioneers making point blank saves on Saginaw's Zach Myers and Zach Walega in the first half. Malone's best chance in the first half came off the foot of senior Sam Erchick. Erchick received a long diagonal pass from junior forward Kelvin Aquino and cut inside to beat his defender to goal but his shot was pulled wide of the target.

The Cardinals Lachlan Savage appeared to have put his team ahead midway through the second half with a strike from 25 yards out, but his swerving effort was tipped splendidly over the bar by Monteiro. Malone was the next team to threaten in the 75th minute when Aquino rounded his defender and went in on goal but he was taken down in the penalty box by a last ditch defensive effort that appeared to have gotten more of the player than ball. The Malone players and bench pleaded for a call but were left dismayed after the center official signaled to play on.

Neither team would relent defensively in the overtime stanzas resulting in the scoreless draw. For the second consecutive game, Malone lost a player to a red card as junior Felipe Delgado was sent off in the 108th minute after receiving his second yellow card. Saginaw Valley State held a 29 to 14 edge in shots and 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. Monteiro made 10 saves en route to his 4th shutout of the season.

With the result Malone improves to (4-5, 4-3-1 GLIAC) while Saginaw Valley State moves to (8-2-2, 5-2-2 GLIAC). Malone will hit the pitch next Friday at Pioneer Field when they face Northwood at 3:00 p.m.
