Slow First Half Sinks Pioneers in GLIAC Quarterfinal

Box Score

The Malone University men's soccer team (6-9-1, 6-6-1 GLIAC) couldn't overcome a bad first half on Wednesday afternoon, losing to Ohio Dominican University 5-1 in the quarterfinal match of the GLIAC Tournament and bringing a close to a successful first year in the conference.

Ohio Dominican (12-5-1, 9-4) would score the game's first goal in the 9th minute on some crisp passing on top of the box. Duncan Campbell fed Justin Wheeler who laced a ball across the goal that was redirected in by forward Fraser Fernandes.

The Panthers would get on the score sheet again 5 minutes later when Jakob Szabo flicked home a Fernandes shot to make the score 2-0.

Wheeler would tack on the third and final goal of the half, beating Malone to a failed clearing attempt and poking the ball by goalkeeper Felipe Monteiro.

Senior Adam Sharpnack would give Malone new life early in the second half, converting a penalty kick to pull the Pioneers to within two goals, 3-1. Junior Kelvin Aquino nearly made it 3-2 with 25 minutes to play but his volley went just wide.

Malone would hang tough until the 73rd minute when Szabo set up Casey Weddle for a tap-in goal. Drew Eddler would add a goal a minute later on a blast from 25 yards out to close out the scoring.

Ohio Dominican outshot Malone 25-13 for the match. Monteiro made seven saves in defeat while Aquino led the team with four shots.
