Box Score
The Malone University men's soccer team fell on the road to Lake Erie College 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
The defeat left the Pioneers' regular-season record at 6-8-1, one victory shy of the .500 winning percentage that is required in order for the squad to compete in the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) Postseason.
Lake Erie's (6-12, 5-8 GLIAC) Jake Shelton scored both goals in the win, the first goals the senior had scored all season. His first came in the 7th minute, beating Pioneer goalkeeper
Felipe Monteiro from in tight. The second, which came in the 74th minute, resulted when he floated the ball over Monteiro from 20 yards out.
Malone would pull to within a goal in the 86th minute when senior
Adam Sharpnack converted a penalty kick but that was as close as they would get to equalizing.
Shots for the game were dead even at 12 while Lake Erie led in shots on goal by a 4-3 count. Juniors
Josh Abend,
Kelvin Aquino and
Felipe Delgado paced the Pioneers with two shots each.
The good news for the Pioneers is that they will still compete in a postseason tournament. Their 6-6-1 record in the GLIAC (Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) was good for a top 6 finish, which qualifies them for the conference tournament. They will travel to compete in the quarterfinal as the visiting team on Tuesday, October 30th. We will post more information, including time of the match and the opponent as soon as the information becomes available.
