Pioneers Win Final Three Sets In Five-Set Victory At Lake Superior State

Sophomore outside hitter Taylor Slauterbeck drilled a team-best 14 kills and added 11 digs in Malone's five-set win at Lake Superior State University on Saturday.

The Malone University volleyball team earned a gutsy five-set come-from-behind win at Lake Superior State University (MI) on Saturday in the second of two matches in northern Michigan over the weekend. After dropping the first two sets, the Pioneers rallied to post victories in the final three sets to pocket the match win over LSSU and earn a weekend sweep. 

With the win, Malone improved to 13-8 overall and to 6-5 in the GLIAC while LSSU fell to 4-18 overall and to 1-10 in GLIAC play.

Although the Pioneers lost the first two sets by scores of 20-25 and 24-26, the team responded with identical 25-19 wins in sets three and four. Another six-point set win ensued as they closed out the match with a 15-9 advantage in the deciding frame.

Outside hitter Taylor Slauterbeck claimed a team-high 14 kills for the squad and also added 11 digs, two block assists and one service ace.  Middle hitter Lauren Townley pounded 10 kills and was also big on defense with three solo blocks and three block assists. In addition, she also tallied one dig and an ace.

Outside hitter Elizabeth Maczuzak racked up 10 kills of her own while also notching a pair of digs and a block assist.   Right side hitter Diana Wallace tagged seven kills and collected three block assists, six digs and two service aces as well.

Setter Jackie Schwamberger offered up an impressive 47 assists on the day and also racked up six kills, six digs, one solo block, one block assist and a service ace.  In addition, defensive specialist Allison Kirby earned an impressive 21 digs on the day to easily lead the squad in that category.

LSSU's Emily Snyder and Nikki Stratelak paced the Lakers in kills with 13 apiece while Meghan Drobish posted a team-high 22 digs.  Setter Marylou Drobish tossed up 34 assists for the squad.

Malone will next compete in a home match against Lake Erie College (3-17, 0-11 GLIAC) on Friday (October 26th) at 7:00 p.m.  Live stats and live video will be available for the match.
