Indoor Track & Field Teams Compete at YSU Invitational; Lepear Smith, Anthony Lombardi Grab First-Place Finishes

Results

The Malone University men's and women's indoor track & field teams competed at the non-scoring Youngstown State University Invitational late Friday afternoon and evening as both Pioneer squads turned in some solid performances, including a first-place finish by two Malone men's student-athletes.

In the men's meet, Lepear Smith captured a victory in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.32 seconds after posting the same time in the prelims (top prelim time as well) among 21 contestants.

Smith blazed to a second-place finish, among 40 entrants in the 60-meter dash prelims in a time of 7.04 seconds while Malik Felton also qualified for the finals with a time of 7.16 (8th). In the finals, Smith recorded a fourth-place finish, among 16 finalists, in 7:07 while Felton placed eighth in 7.13 seconds.

Among four Malone runners in the 200 meters, Smith posted a time of 23.32 to lead the way for the Pioneers while Jason Keniston was next for Malone in 24.42. In the 400 meters, Eric Barto was the sole Malone entrant in the race and crossed the finish line in 52.05 seconds.

Matt Hendrix led four Malone athletes among 26 total runners in the 500 meters with a solid fifth-place time of 1:06.24. Philip Palmer was close behind in eighth place in a time of 1:07.33. 

Nick Meeson finished fourth among 16 runners in the 800-meter event in 2:02.80 while in the one-mile run, Matt McConnell clocked a time of 4:31.02 to finish eighth among 26 entrants. Gage Black represented Malone in the 3000 meters and tallied a time of 9:32.90 while Lucas Shroades, competing in the 5000 meters, notched a time of 17:12.46.

In the men's 4x400 relay event, the Malone A team (among two Pioneer units competing) posted a time of 3:31.05 to finish sixth among 14 teams.

In men's field events, Anthony Lombardi tied for first among 17 jumpers in the high jump event with a leap of 6'5 ½”. Matt Lautanen was next for Malone among three Pioneer entrants with a mark of 6'1”.

In the long jump, JB DeRosa paced Malone with a distance of 19'10 ½”. In the shot put, Tom Reed led the way with a toss of 45'1” to place 14th among 39 throwers.

In the women's meet, Tayler Carpenter and Melissa Wohlheter paced four Malone runners in the 200 meters as they posted times of 28.34 and 28.36, respectively. Carpenter was the lone Pioneer entrant in the 60-meter dash prelims and notched a time of 8.68 seconds.

In the 60-meter hurdle prelims, Courtney Armsey qualified for the finals with a time of 9.55 seconds. In the finals, she finished seventh among the 16 qualifiers in a time of 9.51 seconds.

Meghan Miller led four Pioneer runners in the 400 meters as she crossed the finish line in 1:04.10 while Ashley Spurlock was right behind in 1:04.94.

In the 500 meters, Emily Fisher raced to a fifth-place finish among a 23-woman field in a time of 1:22.87. Rachel Pae finished ninth in the event in 1:24.91.

Katie King blazed to a solid seventh-place finish among 33 entrants, and the only Malone runner in the race, in the 800 meters in 2:22.54.

In a field of 35 runners in the one-mile event, Mattison Rankin placed 10th in 5:19.94 to pace two other Pioneer athletes in the race.

In the 3000 meters, Erin Bauer led the Pioneer charge as she clocked a time of 10:45.93 for eighth place among 25 runners while Tina Oprean was right behind in ninth in 10:52.68.  In the longest women's race of the day, the 5000 meters, Diana Furey represented Malone in the event and pocketed a time of 20:33.16.

In the women's 4x400 relay, Malone raced to a time of 4:19.02 to place eighth among 16 squads.

In field events, Carpenter represented Malone in the high jump and collected a leap of 4'9”. She also posted the better of two Pioneer marks in the long jump with a distance of 15'5”. Laura Page paced the Pioneers in the pole vault as she cleared the bar at 10'3”.

Among three Malone athletes competing in the shot put, Lyndsey Bates led the way with a toss of 34'2”.

The Malone men's and women's teams will next compete at the NCAA Division II Challenge in Geneva, Ohio (at the Spire Institute) February 3-4, beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Friday (Feb. 3).
