The Malone University men's and women's track & field teams competed in their second indoor meet of the season and first after the recent Christmas break at the non-team scoring Doug Raymond Invitational at Kent State University Saturday. In addition, two Pioneer student-athletes traveled to Michigan on Friday and Saturday and competed in the heptathlon at Grand Valley State University's Bob Eubanks Open.
At the Doug Raymond meet, for the Pioneer women,
Tayler Carpenter paced four Pioneer runners in the 200 meter dash field, posting a time of 28.11 while
Meghan Miller led three Malone athletes in the 400 meters in a time of 1:04.85.
In the 1000-meter run,
Katie King pocketed a solid ninth-place finish among 27 runners (five from Malone) in 3:07.91.
Becky Neitzel earned a 15th-place finish in the one-mile run as the sole Malone runner in a 29-member field in 5:24.87. In the 3000-meter event,
Sara Polatas ran a time of 11:01.75 to finish 17th among 29 runners.
Diana Furey, the lone Pioneer runner in the 5000-meter run, posted a time of 20:54.53.
In the 60-meter hurdles,
Courtney Armsey advanced out of the preliminaries into the finals and notched a time of 9.62 seconds.
In the field events,
Laura Page paced Malone in the pole vault open event with a leap of 9' 0.25” while Carpenter posted a mark of 15'6” in the long jump. In the shot put,
Lyndsey Bates led the charge with a toss of 35' 9.50”.
For the Malone men,
Lepear Smith posted the second-fastest prelim time, among 27 entrants, in the 60-meter dash at 7.02 and then blazed to a 6.98 for third place in the finals of the event.
Malik Felton paced three Pioneer runners in the 200 meter race and posted a time of 23.42 while
Philip Palmer led the Malone charge in the 400 meter event in 52.16. In the 800 meters, Matt Hendrix notched a time of 2:01.75 while
Billy Latta, in the 1000 meters, pocketed a 2:42.35.
Nick Meeson represented Malone in the one mile run and crossed the finish line in 4:30.65 while
Matt McConnell posted a 9:02.07 in the 3000 meters. In the 5000 meters,
Lucas Shroades clocked a time of 17:36.71.
In the 60-meter hurdles, Smith again moved out of the prelims and ended up finishing third in the finals of the event in a time of 8.41.
In the field events,
Anthony Lombardi posted a leap of 6' 4.75” to lead Malone in the high jump. In the shot put,
Tom Reed posted a toss of 44' 3.25”.
At the Bob Eubanks Open at GVSU,
Joseph DeRosa finished fourth among 11 competitors in the heptathlon with 4530 points while
Kyle Wagner placed eighth with 4160 points. DeRosa's marks in each event were as follows: 60-meter dash (7.59), long jump (19' 0.50”), shot put (37' 1.25”), high jump (5' 11.5”), 60-meter hurdles (9.13), pole vault (12' 5.5”) and a first-place finish in the 1000 meters (2:45.42). Wagner's marks were: 60-meter dash (7.51), long jump (19' 9.5”), shot put (36' 11”), high jump (6' 3.25”), 60-meter hurdles (9.93), pole vault (10' 2”) and 1000 meters (3:02.73).
The Malone teams will next compete at the Youngstown State University Invitational on Friday, January 27th in a 2:00 p.m. meet.
