Pioneers Post Pair of Wins On Day One Of The Houghton/Roberts Wesleyan Crossover Tournament

Friday's three-set victories over Trinity International (IL) and Houghton (NY) pushed the Pioneers' overall record to 7-5

The Malone University volleyball team travelled to upstate New York on Friday evening to begin play at a crossover tournament co-hosted by Houghton (NY) College and Roberts Wesleyan (NY) College.  The Pioneers opened the event with a 25-21, 25-17, 25-23 triumph over Trinity International (IL) University.  Malone then defeated Houghton on its home court later in the evening, winning again in three sets by final scores of 25-23, 25-15, 25-14.  With the pair of convincing victories, the Pioneers pushed their overall record above the .500 mark, improving to 7-5 on the year.

Against Trinity International, outside hitter Megan Fisher led the way with 12 kills, nine digs and two blocks (one solo).  Middle hitter Hannah Haver registered eight kills while outside hitter Taylor Slauterbeck added seven kills and six digs.  Middle hitter Lauren Townley tallied six kills and a pair of service aces.  Setter Jackie Schwamberger contributed 34 assists and nine digs.

In Friday's finale with Houghton, Fisher again paced the Pioneer attack with 10 kills.  Haver recorded seven kills with three digs and two solo blocks.  Slauterbeck and middle hitter Diana Wallace each posted six kills apiece.  Setter MacKenzie Berkheimer handed out 24 assists while right-side hitter Muriel Carpenter registered a team-high six digs.

Malone's long season-opening stretch of 14 matches away from Osborne Hall will come to a close on Saturday as the squad wraps up play at the crossover event with two more contests on Houghton's campus.  The Pioneers will take on Mountain State (WV) University at 11:00 a.m. before facing the University of Michigan-Dearborn at 1:00 p.m.

Malone will then host its long-awaited home opener on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.against Cedarville University.
