The Malone University softball team was held to just three base hits Monday during a pair of five-inning, shutout losses at the Smash Hit Tournament in Savannah, Georgia. The Pioneers fell 8-0 to the University of Findlay in the opener and then endured a 14-0 defeat to Brewton-Parker (GA) College in game two. Malone's record fell to 1-3 following Monday's action. Findlay, meanwhile, remained undefeated at 3-0 while Brewton-Parker improved its overall record to 18-4.

In game one on Monday, the Oilers did all of their damage early on, plating two runs in the bottom of the first and six more runs in the bottom of the second. Findlay was held off the scoreboard in the third and fourth frames, but the Pioneers were unable to get their offense on track. Centerfielder Elizabeth Sarkissian led off the game with an infield single, but Malone managed just one base hit over the next four innings - a two-out single by rightfielder Brittany Stevenson in the top of the third. Pitcher Jessica Krska started and took the loss (0-1) after working the first 1.1 innings.

Three first-inning errors allowed three unearned Baron runs to cross the plate at the start of Monday's second game. Brewton-Parker then put the contest out of reach with 11 more runs over the next two innings. Designated player Karre Thompson's fifth-inning single proved to be Malone's lone hit of the contest as Baron pitchers Elizabeth Poythress and Laura Hutchins combined for the shutout. Starting pitcher Shelby Snyder was saddled with the loss (0-2) after tossing the first 1.2 innings.

The Pioneers will look to bounce back on Tuesday when they take part in three more Smash Hit Tournament games. Malone will open the triple-header by facing West Liberty (WV) State University at 10:00 a.m. The Pioneers will then take on the event's host, Savannah College of Art & Design, at 12:00 p.m. before wrapping up their busy day with a 2:00 p.m. re-match with Brewton-Parker.
