Pioneers Roll Past Carlow, 80-50

The Malone University women's basketball team used solid shooting and tough defense to pocket a convincing 80-50 victory at home on Saturday afternoon in its American Mideast Conference contest against Carlow (PA) University. The Pioneers shot 50% from the field in the first half to build a commanding 42-24 lead at intermission. Malone then maintained its sizable advantage throughout the final stanza en route to the 30-point triumph, its largest margin of victory this season. The Pioneers' record improved to 7-18 overall and 3-9 in the AMC with the win while the Celtics dropped to 7-14 overall and 1-12 in the conference.

13 different Malone players scored in the game, led by guard Allyson Wilson who posted 18 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Guard Amy Kittle followed with 12 points, five assists and four rebounds. Forward Sarah VanVoorhis added nine points while guard Chelsie Burden came off the bench to toss in eight points and grab three steals.

On the afternoon, the Pioneers scored a total of 26 points off 22 Carlow turnovers and matched a season-high with 13 steals. Malone also held a substantial 44-27 edge in total rebounds and shot the ball well, hitting 29 of 62 (46.8%) field goals, seven of 20 (35%) three-pointers, and 15 of 25 (60%) free throws. The Celtics countered by connecting on 18 of 50 (36%) shots from the field, three of 17 (17.6%) threes and 11 of 14 (78.6%) foul shots.

Guard Chanel Berry paced Carlow with 14 points.

The Pioneers will look to make it two in a row on Tuesday when they return to action with a 5:30 p.m. AMC contest on the road against Wilberforce University (3-24 overall, 1-11 AMC). In this season's previous meeting between the two squads (Dec. 4), Malone topped the Bulldogs at Osborne Hall by a final score of 84-57.
