The Malone University men's and women's cross country teams concluded their 2011 seasons in convincing fashion Saturday morning as both squads captured national titles at the NCCAA National Championships in Cedarville, Ohio. At the Elvin R. King Cross Country Course on the campus of Cedarville University,
Tony Migliozzi won the individual men's national title in leading the men to victory among a 30-team field while the Pioneer women took the title among 25 teams competing.
The Malone men placed five runners in the top ten, taking the 1-4-5-7-8 spots among 209 runners, to post 25 points as Cedarville finished as the runner-up with 66 points. California Baptist University placed third with 82 points, Spring Arbor (MI) University was fourth with 141 points and Trinity Christian (IL) College rounded out the top five with 193 points.
The Malone women saw their first five finish in the top 15 spots among 184 runners competing as the team posted 59 points to defeat runner-up California Baptist, which had 75 points, by 16 points. Indiana Wesleyan University took third with 89 points, Roberts Wesleyan (NY) College finished fourth with 104 points and Cedarville rounded out the top five with 140 points.
For the Pioneer men, Migliozzi blazed through the 8K men's course in a time of 25:00.42 to easily defeat the runner-up by over 38 seconds.
Andrew Trusty was next for Malone and fourth overall in a time of 25:45.04 while
Jarod Williams was right behind in fifth place in 25:52.90. Also scoring for Malone were
Casey Meeson in seventh place (25:56.61) and
Nick Fresenko in eighth place (26:06.10).
Jordan McKelley took 13th place in 26:25.15 and joined the above-mentioned five runners as an NCCAA All-American by virtue of a “top 15” finish in the national event.
Jared Zollars also ran a solid race, finishing in 26th place overall in a time of 26:57.21.
For the Malone women,
Ashton Avery led the charge by finishing eighth overall in a time of 18:51.84 over the 5K course.
Mattison Rankin also grabbed a top-ten finish, taking the 10th spot in 18:55.18, while
Erin Bauer was close behind in 12th in 18:58.88. Also scoring for the team were
Tynae Wilson in 14th (19:03.09) and
Sara Polatas in 15th (19:03.43). All five runners earned NCCAA All-America honors by virtue of their “top 15” national finish.
Katie King narrowly missed All-America honors, finishing in 17th in a time of 19:08.20 and less than five seconds out of a top-15 spot.
Madison Schuler also competed for the squad and notched a very respectable 21st-place finish in 19:16.36.

Jack Hazen earned NCCAA National Coach of the Year accolades for both men and women.
