Pioneer Volleyball Rolls To Habitat For Humanity Homecoming Tourney Championship; Hannah Haver Named MVP

Junior middle hitter Hannah Haver earned MVP honors at Malone's Habitat For Humanity Homecoming Tournament over the weekend, leading Malone to a perfect 4-0 record and the tourney team championship.

The Malone University volleyball team, with a perfect 4-0 record over its two-day Habitat For Humanity Homecoming Tournament, including a pair of victories on Saturday, won the event among a six-team field.  Ashford (IA) University, with a 3-1 record overall, earned a second-place finish.

On Saturday, the Pioneers opened with a four-set win over Bluefield (VA) College 25-19, 25-9, 24-26, 25-16 before closing out the tourney with a grueling five-set victory over Shawnee State University 22-25, 25-20, 25-12, 21-25, 17-15. The Pioneers extended their winning streak to six games and now have a record of 17-7 on the season.

Against Bluefield, middle hitter Lauren Townley blasted a team-high 11 kills in the match followed closely by middle hitter Hannah Haver and outside hitter Megan Fisher who tallied 10 kills apiece. Haver collected 16 digs in the match while defensive specialist Katie Hasebein drilled five service aces against the Rams. In addition, setter Jackie Schwamberger tossed up 24 assists in the match.

Against Shawnee State, Fisher and outside hitter Taylor Slauterbeck pounded out 15 kills against the Bears while Townley drilled 14 kills. Haver led the way in digs with 14 while Fisher contributed 12. Also pacing the defensive cause was Schwamberger who notched four blocks (two solo) in the match while also fueling the offense with an impressive 58 assists against Shawnee State. Three other Pioneers contributed three blocks each – middle hitter Diana Wallace (two solo), Fisher (one solo) and Haver (one solo).

Three Pioneer athletes were selected to the 12-woman All-Tournament as Haver, Schwamberger and Fisher earned the accolades. In addition, Haver was voted the tourney MVP for her outstanding performance over the weekend.

Malone will next compete in another home contest on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. against Lake Erie College.
