Malone Downs NCAA Division II Tiffin In Four Sets

The Malone University volleyball team picked up a four-set home win over NCAA Division II Tiffin University on Wednesday night at Osborne Hall.  The Pioneers dropped the first set of the evening by a 21-25 final.  Malone quickly responded, though, taking the next three frames by scores of 25-18, 25-16, and 25-17.  The hard-fought victory gave the Pioneers their second triumph over the Dragons in the span of a month as Malone had previously  registered a three-set win at Tiffin's Gillmor Center on September 6th.  The Pioneers' overall record improved to 13-7 following Wednesday's match while the Dragons fell to 3-11.

Outside hitter Megan Fisher led the way for the Malone attack with 14 kills, a season-high five service aces and seven digs.  Outside hitter Taylor Slauterbeck and middle hitter Lauren Townley each followed with 10 kills apiece with Slauterbeck also contributing six digs.  Middle hitter Hannah Haver added six kills and a solo block.  Setter Jackie Schwamberger registered six kills to go with 37 assists, eight digs and a solo block.  Defensive specialist Katie Hasebein chipped in with a team-high 11 digs.

Malone will be back in action over the weekend as it hosts the 2011 Habitat for Humanity Homecoming Tournament.  The Pioneers will open the event on Friday with a 3:00 p.m. contest against Ashford (IA) University.  Malone will then wrap up the opening day of competition with a 7:00 p.m. match against the University of Rio Grande.  On Saturday, the Pioneers will take on Bluefield (VA) College at 10:00 a.m. before concluding the Homecoming weekend with a 12:00 p.m. match-up with Shawnee State University.  Click here for a complete tournament schedule.
