The Malone University men's soccer team posted a dramatic 2-1 double overtime win at home on Thursday against local rival Walsh University. The visiting Cavaliers scored early in the contest before Malone knotted the game up later in the first frame. After a scoreless second half and first ten-minute overtime period, the Pioneers won the contest on a goal with just under two minutes remaining in the second and final OT period. With the win, Malone improved to 9-7 on the season while Walsh dropped to 14-3 on the year.
Just minutes into the contest, at the 3:29 mark, Walsh's Ben Truax scored off a pass through the middle of the defense with a shot past the near post. Then, at the 25:41 mark, Malone got the equalizer when
Rubem Miranda scored an unassisted goal after the ball was deflected right in front of the goal and he drilled a hard shot off the keeper's hands and into the back of the net.
After neither team could score in the second half nor in the first 10-minute overtime period, Malone scored the game winner with just 1:46 left in the second and final overtime as
Kelvin Aquino took a pass from
Felipe Delgado from outside the box and drilled a close shot past the keeper.
Malone held a slight 27-22 advantage in total shots while Walsh had the edge in corner kicks by an 8-4 margin. Pioneer goalkeeper
Felipe Monteiro collected an impressive 13 saves in the contest while Walsh goalie Nate Rech posted eight saves.
Malone will next compete at NCAA Div. II #21 ranked Saginaw Valley State University (11-2-3) on Saturday in a 3:00 p.m. contest. By virtue of its win today, Malone has guaranteed itself a .500 record or better and will now compete in an upcoming NCCAA regional event (dates, times, seedings TBA). The Pioneers will also compete in the four-team Ohio Independent Conference Championships with the semifinal round (#4 at #1 and #3 at #2) slated for next Thursday (Nov. 3rd). Seedings and times for the semifinals will not be determined until next Tuesday.
