With just over three minutes remaining in the contest at Davenport University on Friday night, the Malone University women's soccer team secured the game-winning goal to earn a 2-1 victory over the host Panthers. The Pioneers scored a goal early in the first half only to be matched by Davenport a few minutes later before the late heroics by Malone for its win. With the victory, Malone improved to 3-11 on the year while Davenport fell to 10-6.
Malone opened the scoring at the 9:52 mark as
Jasmine Evans pocketed the early goal, unassisted, off a block in front of the goalie to the left side of the net. Then, just over one minute later, DU's Lindsey Klein scored the equalizer to make the score 1-1. It would be 77 minutes later, before the third and final goal of the match would be scored, but it proved to be the gamewinner for Malone as
Ally Smith collected the goal on a midfield shot over the DU goalkeeper's head into the right corner.
Malone held a 25-14 advantage in total shots while Davenport held the edge in corner kicks by a 7-2 margin. Pioneer goalkeeper
Angie Nutial secured four saves in the match while Panther goalie Catherine Howard posted nine saves.
Malone will next compete in a home contest against Walsh University (11-3 record prior to its match against Houghton College Saturday) on Wednesday (Oct. 26th) in a 3:00 p.m. game.
