Pioneers Conclude Play At Madonna Classic By Splitting Matches With Rochester, NAIA #21 Bellevue

Middle hitter Lauren Townley racked up 17 kills in Malone's narrow loss to Bellevue on Saturday. In recognition of her strong weekend performance, the 5'11 sophomore was named to the Crusader Classic All-Tournament Team.

The Malone University volleyball team wrapped up its weekend trip to Madonna University's Crusader Classic in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Saturday by tallying a 1-1 record in matches against Rochester (MI) College and NAIA #21 Bellevue (NE) University.  After splitting contests with Madonna and Davenport (MI) University on Friday, the Pioneers began play on Saturday with a 25-15, 25-13, 25-19 triumph over Rochester.  Malone then dropped a hard-fought, five-set battle to Bellevue in the weekend finale by final scores of 25-21, 24-26, 14-25, 25-23, and 14-16.  Following the 2-2 weekend in Michigan, the Pioneers' overall record now stands at 21-9.

Middle hitter Lauren Townley and outside hitter Taylor Slauterbeck each posted nine kills to pace the Malone attack in Saturday's opener against Rochester.  In addition to her attack totals, Townley also racked up four service aces and six blocks (one solo).  Middle hitter Hannah Haver registered eight kills, nine digs and three block assists.  Outside hitter Megan Fisher added seven kills and seven digs while setter Jackie Schwamberger totaled 36 assists, three service aces, three kills, four digs and three block assists.

Townley again led the way against 21st-ranked Bellevue with 17 kills and four blocks (one solo).  Fisher posted 14 kills and a season-high 18 digs.  Slauterbeck tallied 11 kills.  Haver recorded nine kills and 15 digs while Schwamberger posted 44 assists and 13 digs.

Malone will be back in action next weekend as the squad travels to Mount Vernon Nazarene University to compete in the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) East Region Tournament.  The Pioneers will open the event with a pair of pool-play matches on Friday, facing Nyack (NY) College at 3:00 p.m. before taking on the host Cougars at 7:00 p.m. The tournament's semifinal and championship rounds will then follow on Saturday.  The winner of the NCCAA East Region Tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCCAA National Tournament which is slated to be held December 1-3 in Kissimmee, Florida.
