Box Score
The Malone University men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 defeat in its home match against Cedarville University on Tuesday afternoon. The visiting Yellow Jackets controlled the tempo early on, pulling ahead 2-0 after scoring twice in the first 16 minutes of the match. An unassisted goal by Pioneer forward
Ryan Brumbaugh cut the deficit in half in the 76th minute, but Malone was unable to even things up over the final 14 minutes of play. The Pioneers' overall record slipped to 8-7 with the narrow loss while Cedarville improved to 9-5.
Midfielder Justin Santaro put the Yellow Jackets in front 1-0 just under five minutes into the match after gathering a nice centering pass from forward Jeremy Hoppe and firing a shot to the far post. Cedarville then struck again just over 10 minutes later as midfielder James Twinem swiped the ball away from the Pioneer defense and chipped a shot just over the reach of Malone keeper
Felipe Monteiro.
With about 10 minutes remaining in the first half, the match was halted for approximately 40 minutes as a thunderstorm passed through the vicinity of Malone's campus.
The Pioneers fought back into the contest following the lightning delay, trimming the lead to 2-1 when Brumbaugh managed to corral a loose ball in heavy traffic in front of the net and then rip a shot past Yellow Jacket netminder Curtis Ranck.
After being out-shot by a 9-2 margin in the first half, Malone turned up the offensive pressure in the second stanza, registering an 8-6 edge in second-half shot attempts. On the afternoon, Cedarville held a 15-10 advantage in total shots and a 5-3 edge in shots on goal.
Monteiro posted three saves while Ranck stopped two Pioneer shot attempts.
Malone will be idle over the weekend and will return to action next Thursday (Oct. 27) with a 3:00 p.m. home contest against local rival Walsh University (12-1 overall).
