Men's, Women's Indoor Track & Field Teams Compete At All-Ohio Championships; Jason Rook Qualifies For NAIA Nationals In Pole Vault

The Malone University men's and women's indoor track & field teams competed at the All-Ohio Indoor Championships, hosted by Kent State University, on Friday and Saturday. Although neither team took a full contingent of athletes, the Pioneer men tallied eight points to finish 12th among 14 teams scoring points while the Malone women's team did not score (16 teams scored). The Ohio State University captured the men's team title with 161 points while the University of Akron was the runner-up with 138 points. The University of Cincinnati won the women's team championship with 119 points as Akron finished second with 78.20 points.

For the men's squad, junior Jason Rook earned a sixth-place finish in the pole vault with a leap of 15' 7.25”, an NAIA “A” standard qualifying mark. Other top finishes in the men's meet included Juho Hietanen taking seventh in the high jump at 6' 4.25” (while Anthony Lombardi also cleared 6' 4.25” but placed 12th due to more misses), Johnnie Legrair posting an eighth-place finish in the long jump at 21' 8.25” and Kyle Wagner pocketing a seventh-place finish in the heptathlon with 3979 points. 
 
The Malone women's team was led by Beth Costello who placed 14th in the pentathlon with a total of 2682 points.

In other men's action, Legrair posted a time of 8.46 seconds in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles, narrowly missing out on qualifying for the finals by just 0.1 second. Justin Baum finished 17th in the 5000 meters (15:34.94) while the men's 4x400 relay team of Rook, Phillip Palmer, Tony Davis and Bradley Gee finished eighth in a time of 3:41.50. Mtume Msikizi-Jackson finished 17th in the long jump at 18' 10”. In the triple jump, Steven Young placed 12th at 42' 7.5” while Msikizi-Jackson finished close behind in 14th at 39' 10.75”.

In other women's action, Meghan Miller paced three Malone athletes in the 200-meter dash in 28.49 seconds while Ashley Spurlock led three Pioneer runners in the 400 meters in a time of 1:06.26, barely edging out teammate Hannah McCormish who tallied a 1:06.36. In addition, Miller turned in a time of 9.81 seconds in the 60-meter hurdle prelims, Tara Leach led Malone in the long jump with a leap of 14' 5.75” and Rita Liberati collected a mark of 30' 4.75” in the triple jump.
 
The Malone men's and women's teams will next compete at the GaGREAT Open in Geneva, Ohio next Friday and Saturday (Jan. 28-29).
