Box Score
The Malone University men's soccer team, led by second-year head coach Chris Carmichael, fell 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in its 2010 season-opening match at Aquinas (MI) College. The Pioneers held an early 1-0 lead thanks to an unassisted goal in the 13th minute by midfielder
Adam Sharpnack. However, Malone was unable to hang on to the early advantage as the Saints tied it in the 26th minute and then took the lead for good with another score in the 76th minute of play. The come-from-behind victory improved Aquinas' record to 1-1-0 while Malone dropped to 0-1-0
Sharpnack, who registered a team-high six goals last season, notched the Pioneers' first score of 2010 after collecting the ball off a defender and then finishing to the far back post. Aquinas, which held an 11-3 advantage in total shots on goal, was able to recover from the early deficit, though, fighting back with two unassisted goals. Pioneer keeper
Felipe Monteiro made nine saves in his first collegiate match while a pair of Saint keepers each posted one save apiece.
Malone will return to action on Saturday as the squad travels to Upland, Indiana for a 4:00 p.m. road match against Taylor University.
