The Malone University men's and women's cross country teams competed at the NAIA National Championships in Vancouver, Washington on Saturday as the men's squad earned a third-place finish among a 32-team field while the women's team placed fourth among 32 teams at the national event.
After achieving an incredible feat of winning the previous three NAIA national titles, the Malone men were unable to pull off four in a row but finished in a still impressive third place with 251 points as Southern Oregon University won the national title with 105 points. Wayland Baptist (TX) University was the runner-up with 124 points, Shawnee State University placed fourth with 254 points and Eastern Oregon University rounded out the top five with 276 points.
The Malone women tallied 164 points for their fourth-place finish as California State San Marcos captured the women's NAIA national championship with 88 points. Biola (CA) University was the runner-up with 127 points, Black Hills State (SD) University finished third with 151 points and Simon Fraser (B.C.) University rounded out the top five with 177 points.
In the men's race, senior
James Zeuch closed out his Pioneer cross country career in solid fashion by earning his third consecutive NAIA All-America honor with an 11th-place finish overall, among 326 runners, in a time of 25:12 to lead the squad.
Jarod Williams was next for Malone and finished in 61
st overall in 26:10. Also scoring for the Malone men were

th (26:21) and
Nick Meeson in 94
th (26:33).
Jordan McKelley and
Nick Fresenko also competed for the team and finished in 153
rd (27:06) and 162
nd (27:10), respectively.
In the women's event,
Tynae Wilson was again the top finisher for the team as she placed 20
th overall, among 331 runners, in a time of 18:22 to earn the lone NAIA All-American honor for the women's squad.
Erin Bauer finished second for the team and in 50
th place overall in 18:52. Also scoring for the team were
Ashton Avery in 55
th (18:54),
Lindsey Pifher in 56
th (18:54) and
Gabrielle Wuensch in 61
st (18:59).
Kristen Downing and
Tina Oprean also competed for the squad and finished in 78
th (19:10) and 179
th (19:54), respectively.
In addition, Malone finished second overall in the Team Award for lowest combined score for both the men's and women's team at the meet. Malone, which had won the combined award last year, finished second this year with 415 points (251 men, 164 women) as Southern Oregon won this year's Team Award with 360 total points (105 men, 255 women).
