Malone Begins Play At NCCAA East Region Tournament With Victories Over Nyack, Geneva

The Malone University volleyball team picked up wins over Nyack (NY) College and Geneva (PA) College Friday afternoon on the first day of the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Associaton) East Region Tournament that is being held at Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, New York. The Pioneers, now 24-4 overall, will continue play at the event on Saturday with a 10:00 a.m. contest against Mt. Vernon Nazarene University and a 2:00 p.m. match against the tournament host, Roberts Wesleyan. The winner of the five-team event will receive an automatic bid to the NCCAA National Tournament that will be held in Kissimmee, Florida December 2-4.
 
In Malone's 25-17, 25-14, 19-25, 25-13 triumph over Nyack, Middle hitter Lauren Townley paced the Pioneer attack with 11 kills and five block assists. Outside hitter Lori Gale followed with nine kills, two service aces and nine digs. Middle hitter Hannah Haver posted seven kills, two service aces and a team-high 12 digs while outside hitter Jennifer Gahagan also notched seven kills. Other contributors included right-side hitter Megan Fisher with five kills and four block assists, setter Jackie Schwamberger with 29 assists and libero Allison Kirby with 11 digs.

Gahagan led the way for Malone in its 25-17, 25-20, 25-15 victory over Geneva as she registered 13 kills, two aces, eight digs and two solo blocks. Haver and Townley each followed with eight kills apiece with Haver also posting nine digs. Gale added six kills, four aces and eight digs. Schwamberger totaled five kills and 31 assists. Fisher also contributed five kills while right-side hitter Emily Beiting scooped up a team-high 11 digs.
