Prior to Malone: Sams, a two-way athlete in high school, was the Buchtel Offensive Player of the Year. Defensively, he earned First Team All-City, First Team Northeast Ohio Inland All-District, and Associated Press All-Ohio Division III Special Mention. As a student, he was named to the most improved Merit Roll.
